There
are so many great features of Overture, it's difficult to know where to
begin.
Overture did not start out life as a Cakewalk or a Windows product, but
rather as a Mac application from Opcode. The Mac and Windows versions
are nearly identical, save for a few minor dialog box visuals, and ship
on the same CD.
If you've used products such as Finale, you'll find that Overture is
much easier to use and has a much faster learning curve. If your
experience is limited more to programs like "Desktop Sheet
Music", you're in for a treat. Overture is a very powerful tool
with good midi implementation. Movable menus, multiple page views, and
easy lyric entry are a big plus. Final output is of very high quality.
As with all of Cakewalks products, the documentation is excellent and
very complete (a rarity for software companies these days). |

Early
versions (Mac and Windows) had some bugs, but have since been addressed
and resolved by Cakewalk Tech people. Mac users still have a few
complaints (see the Cakewalk Overture newsgroup at news.cakewalk.com),
mostly about postscript printers. As a user of Cakewalk Pro Audio, I
would have liked to have seen Pro Audios .wrk file format supported. |

Summary: |
If
you need something with a more guts than the beginner notation packages,
Overture is hard to beat. It's selling price is very competitive and it
is just as powerful, if not more so, than software selling for twice the
price. Cakewalk Tech Support has always been, in my personal experience,
outstanding. What impressed me the most about Overture was how quickly I
was able to become very proficient with the program. |
